WCHM invites participants for its tenth annual Canoe & Wooden Boat Show, to be held in conjunction with Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Day on May 25, 2019. This one day free event will also include museum tours and open house, the unveiling of new displays, ongoing activities in the canoe workshop, and live music and food and beverage in the beer garden. Now is the time to make plans to be an exhibitor and display your canoe, wooden boat, or other canoe related items of interest.
Wooden boats of all shapes, sizes, and designs are welcome, both classic and modern, as well as all kinds of classic and vintage water and paddling related items. Whether you have items to sell, or you just have something to show off, there will be many interested folks attending this free event. Exhibitors can include individuals, commercial entities, non-profits, authors, government agencies, educators, crafters, and businesses whose products or services are relevant to boaters and wooden boats and canoes.
Booth space is free, and reserving a space is easy. Use our online booth reservation form by clicking on the bar in the column to the right, or request one by emailing to info@wisconsincanoeheritagemuseum.org or calling 715-635-2479. Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Day is produced by the WCHM each year on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.
The canoe museum is also celebrating its 10th year since incorporating as a non-profit in 2008. Both anniversaries will be celebrated during Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Day. The public is invited to this free event that will feature an annual canoe and wooden boat show on the street in front of the museum, plus tours and open house in the museum exhibit hall, ongoing activities in the canoe workshop, and live music, food and beverage available in the beer garden.
The main attraction of the day will be the Canoe & Wooden Boat Show. A wide array of antique canoes, boats, and canoe related materials will be on display, with collectors, builders, and canoeing enthusiasts in general bringing their gems to display, trade, sell, or just simply talk about. John Fuller is coming from Duluth with a 15’ 1942 Old Town wood canvas square stern canoe. Fred Weber is coming from Sheboygan to demonstrate his Myka Canoe Loaders, an adaptive aid to loading and unloading a canoe to and from a vehicle. Steve Hegna is returning from Black River Falls with his newly restored 18’ 1915 Old Town Ideal and an original 15’ 1933 Old Town Fifty-Pounder. One of the last boats made by the Hayward Boat Company, a 14’ oak slat rowboat, is coming with John Hackemer from Naperville, Illinois. George Nelson of Minoqua is bringing a 1938 wood canvas Prospector Vee-Stern canoe with a 1933 Johnson A-65 4.1 hp motor. Some 25 to 30 exhibitors are expected in all.
Meanwhile, out in the beer garden there will be live music on the “back porch” stage. Brave Cowboy is returning, featuring Jason Rabuck on harmonica and guitar and Eric Schubring on banjo and guitar. They provide an inspiring and vibrant blend of folk, rock, blues, and originals. They will be joined by the bluegrass duo of Tom & Jed from Ashland, and the old-time stringband duo Four Mile Portage from Duluth. Here is the tentative stage schedule for 2018: 11:00 Four Mile Portage, 11:40 Tom & Jed, 12:30 Brave Cowboy, 1:30 Four Mile Portage, 2:10 Tom & Jed, 3:00 Brave Cowboy.
While the boat show transpires out in the street, the beer garden will feature live music on the “back porch stage.” Brave Cowboy returns as favorites from last year, with Jason Rabuck on harmonica and guitar and Eric Schubring on banjo and guitar. And like the character in Edward Abbey’s book, Brave Cowboy refuses to be branded, labeled, or fenced in by musical stereotypes. They provide an inspired and vibrant blend of folk, rock, blues, and originals. They will be joined this year by the bluegrass duo of Tom & Jed from Ashland and another group yet to be announced.
Inside, the canoe shop we will plan to feature several demonstrations and workshops on various wooden canvas canoe construction techniques.
